Hi everyone! This week’s book review is a motivational/inspirational book about having courage and persistence, amongst other things, to bring out the creativeness that we have in all us. It’s a book called Big Magic, Creative Living Beyond Fear* by Elizabeth Gilbert.
About the Book (Synopsis from Amazon)
From the worldwide bestselling author of Eat Pray Love: the path to the vibrant, fulfilling life you’ve dreamed of. Readers of all ages and walks of life have drawn inspiration and empowerment from Elizabeth Gilbert’s books for years. Now this beloved author digs deep into her own generative process to share her wisdom and unique perspective about creativity.
With profound empathy and radiant generosity, she offers potent insights into the mysterious nature of inspiration. She asks us to embrace our curiosity and let go of needless suffering. She shows us how to tackle what we most love, and how to face down what we most fear. She discusses the attitudes, approaches, and habits we need in order to live our most creative lives.
Balancing between soulful spirituality and cheerful pragmatism, Gilbert encourages us to uncover the “strange jewels” that are hidden within each of us. Whether we are looking to write a book, make art, find new ways to address challenges in our work, embark on a dream long deferred, or simply infuse our everyday lives with more mindfulness and passion, Big Magic cracks open a world of wonder and joy.
Through humour and recounting her life experience, Elizabeth Gilbert breaks down exactly what Big Magic means – creative living. The book is broken down into six parts, each one describing the different steps to inspire us lead a creative life. It starts off with, my favourite one, Courage. She describes how been a creative person is not just for artists and authors and musicians, but rather creativity is in each and every one of us. She describes how fear should be embraced as; well it’s a natural part of taking the steps to doing what we want, what we have dreamt of.
This is a self-help guide, and there are good nuggets of inspiration throughout the book such as following those little pangs of curiosity that we may get as they can lead places and embracing rejection and failure and using it to fuel your desire to achieve your dreams even more than before. However, I did feel that I had to wade through a lot of detailing of her life, which may sound ridiculous as she has written this as from experience and her view on inspiration and creativity, but sometimes I had to put the book down for a little while before I could get my head back into it.
I did laugh out loud several times and I have sticky notes all over the book highlighting the bits I liked, so overall that means I did enjoy it! This is the only book of Elizabeth Gilberts that I have read, but I do want to get my hands on Eat Pray Love so stay tuned for that review:)
