If you are planning on nursing your baby then this post on breastfeeding must haves that will help make nursing easier is a must read! Breastfeeding is wonderful and difficult all at the same time. It is also not for everyone. For me, personally, it started off good, but during the cluster feeding stages it was really challenging and there were one or two tears – completely normal by the way so don’t worry if you are feeling teary eyed, we have probably all been there!
When I think back on those early days, which are the hardest – you can read about one of the challenges I had here – I realised that I had a few things that I ALWAYS had within arms reach each time I was breastfeeding.
Honestly, having these breastfeeding must haves close by, will make nursing much easier for any breastfeeding Mum. So here you are, my no fluff list of breastfeeding essentials.

1. Have a Breastfeeding Station
I am not sure what else to call this, but basically, I always feed my daughter sitting in the same spot on the couch (except during the night obviously). I kept a small table right beside the couch so I could keep all my essentials! So I am calling this little area my ‘breastfeeding station’ and you should definitely find a comfortable place to nurse you baby, somewhere where you can leave your own essentials, within arms reach.
2. Water
Probably the most important thing that you can keep close by is water. Every chance you get fill up your glass, or better have a reusable bottle that holds more and that wont spill if you knock it over by accident.
3. Hakka Pump
This little guy is a GREAT investment and is not overly expensive. It works great to catch any milk let down that you might normally loose. If you have not heard of a Hakka Pump, then here is why it is so great. While you are nursing you pop the pump onto your other breast and it catches the let down that would normally be lost in a breast pad. These also work great as an ordinary pump. It works well if you are away from you baby for a few hours and need to pump, it is just so handy to throw into your handbag or nappy bay.
4. Nursing Pillow
I really did get good use out of my nursing pillow. Particularly during those cluster feeding days/weeks. I would definitely recommend getting one that has a removable cover, just for easier cleaning!
5. Breast Pads
You can never have enough reusable breast pads near by, especially for the first few months. I loved using these reusable breast pads. They are great environmentally friendly option, cheaper in the long run and you will have them for any future pregnancies. They are honestly no extra work, just throw them in the wash with the baby clothes, easy!
6. Nipple Cream
An absolute MUST HAVE for any breastfeeding Mum! I really loved using this one as it was an all natural option and you didn’t have to wash it off before the baby nurses. What might be eve better, is that it actually works!
7. Nursing Bra
The most comfortable and convenient thing ever, the nursing bra! Not sure I can ever go back to wearing an under wire bra again!

8. Nursing Nightdress
I have a couple of nursing nightdresses of these and I love them. They are really comfortable and super handy for those night feeds.
9. Kindle
I am not joking when I say this is the BEST thing I had during my breastfeeding journey. There is only so much looking at your phone you can do. I found my kindle so great to have during those night feeds. When you are up a few of times a night a kindle can really be a great essential to have. The great thing is there are always kindle daily deals so you can great offers on books.
10. Phone charger/ Phone / Earphones
Sometimes while you are breastfeeding, it’s a time when you might actually get some stuff done, whether it is research for a baby product you are thinking of buying or maybe even doing an online grocery shop. You are more than likely always going to have your phone near you (because we have to take about 100 baby pictures a day!), so make sure your charger is ready to go if needed. I found it really handy to have my earphones near me too.
11. Feeding Schedule Tracker
Get can yourself a small notebook and pen to help you keep track of those feeds, OR you can nab our FREE newborn feeding tracker below! Writing them down can be super helpful as the sleep deprivation can really mess with your memory for a while.
That’s it, the list of my breastfeeding must haves to make nursing easier, the items that made those tougher days easier and that will also hopefully make your days nursing easier too! I would also really love to know what YOU had or did that helped make nursing smoother, just leave it in a comment below!
